Sri Lanka is a small island. Surrounded on all four sides by the Indian Ocean, the beautiful places to see and visit are limitless. Perhaps this is why some foreigners love our country so immensely. The gorgeous coastline of our nation multiplies that beauty many times over. We, who were born in Sri Lanka, are truly fortunate, as we have inherited such an enchanting country.
Keeping this pride in mind, we chose a coastline as our destination for today. It is a wonderful location where you can spend your time relaxing and having fun: the Polhena Beach strip, known to us all. It is a very beautiful beach situated in Matara, in the Southern Province. Polhena Beach is a perfect place to witness the sun setting against the reddish sky and the birds flying close to the horizon.
Since it is located close to Matara town, travelling here is not difficult. The beach is only about two kilometres away from the centre of Matara. It can be counted among the most beautiful coastlines in Sri Lanka. This particular beach is very popular among both local and foreign visitors. Everyone speaks of it as the most suitable beach for bathing.
We set off early that morning, as we wanted to enjoy this experience throughout the entire day. Since we travelled from the Galle side, our route was along the Galle-Matara main road, passing Kamburugamuwa and Walgama, and then turning right at the Polhena junction. From there, it is about a two-kilometre drive to reach the beach. Having travelled this distance, we arrived at our desired destination—the beautiful Polhena Beach.
It is a charming beach just to look at. Since it is safe for bathing, there were quite a lot of people, but that certainly did not hinder us. It is always valuable to know a bit more detail about any place you visit, so we looked into why Polhena Beach is so attractive.
The first reason is its natural formation, which makes it safe even for a small child to bathe there. A second main factor is that the beach is enclosed by a coral reef, which prevents strong waves from reaching the shore. Furthermore, Polhena Beach is very suitable for those who come for leisure, as well as those who come to learn how to swim.
Another point we learned is that the chance of theft or trouble from unwelcome elements is very low, even on weekdays, due to the high number of people who visit for recreation. There is a beautiful coral reef stretching for about four kilometres along the Polhena coastline. Various types of fish and even sea turtles frequent this area. Therefore, only those of you who come to Polhena will get to see and experience all this beauty. So, you must not forget to come and visit!
In addition to enjoying the beauty of the beach, there is another advantage: you can also visit local places to buy food, drink, and various items of clothing unique to the Matara area. All in all, Polhena is like a jewel for the small island of Sri Lanka. Because of this, it is your responsibility to protect such a lovely place.
Aside from enjoying the beauty with your family during your holiday, please do not engage in inappropriate behaviour like consuming alcohol, causing trouble for others who have come to enjoy themselves. Similarly, do not take polythene or plastic into this naturally beautiful environment and pollute it. If that happens, the beauty we enjoy today will be lost to our future generations.
